Be the heating engineer locals find first
Most homeowners with a broken boiler don’t scroll far. They look at the three businesses on the map, check the reviews and get in touch. If you’re not in that top three for the areas you cover, those jobs go to someone else.
Local SEO is how you get there. You can see the full service on my local SEO page, or read how I help trades and local services more widely.
Why one strategy doesn’t fit every area
Google Maps rankings depend heavily on how close your business is to the person searching. Take Greater Manchester, where I’m based: an engineer in Bolton won’t automatically show up for someone searching in Didsbury, however good their website is. Your targeting should match the areas you actually want work from.
What I’ve learned from 25 heating and plumbing businesses
I’ve worked with around 25 heating and plumbing businesses, helping them improve their websites, local SEO and online visibility. The ones getting the best results tend to have four things in common:
Specific, locally relevant content consistently performs better than generic service pages on their own. It’s not just about targeting keywords. It’s about showing genuine experience and completed work, and building trust with the people who might contact you.
A well-structured website, strong location pages, an optimised Google Business Profile and genuine reviews work best together. Fix one and ignore the rest, and you’ll only see part of the benefit.
See how I put this into practice in my Manchester Heating Experts case study.
Seven things every heating engineer needs to get right
Each matters, but none works on its own. Here’s the short version.

How long does local SEO take for a heating business?+
Quick wins, like a properly set up Google Business Profile, can help within weeks. Bigger improvements in the map pack usually build over three to six months, depending on your area and competition.
I’m based outside the area I want to work in. Can I still rank there?+
You can, but it’s harder in the map results, which favour businesses close to the searcher. A strong location page, real jobs from that area and reviews from local customers give you the best chance.
Do I need a page for every town I cover?+
Only for the areas you genuinely want work from. A handful of useful, specific pages beats dozens of thin ones that just swap the town name.
Do you only work with heating engineers in Manchester?+
No. I’m based in Greater Manchester, but I work with heating businesses across the UK.
Do you work with plumbers too?+
Yes. Many of my clients do both. See local SEO for plumbers.
